Hue is a basic color family.
But it’s actually easier to think of hue as the generic name that pops into your head when you first see a color— the hue is “orange” rather than “tangerine sunset” and “blue” rather than “cerulean lake”
Roy G. Biv is the traditional acronym for the rainbow hues (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet).
Hue describes a color's position within the visible color spectrum. Hue doesn’t tell us anything about the value (lightness or darkness) and saturation (intensity or dullness).
Colors within the same hue family can vary in temperature, value, and saturation. Crimson, scarlet, and burgundy are all red hues, but have very different characteristics.
In the Lab, we organize colored pencils by hue family to make it easier to compare similar colors across different brands.
